Upper Pottsgrove Township has expanded its open space and recreation resources with the development of a trailhead at Schwenk Woods and the addition of Kehl Meadows at the Althouse Arboretum.
The Township received a DCNR Community Conservation and Partnership Program grant for $72,000 and provided equal matching funds to acquire 2.5 acres from the Kehl Family. In the newly acquired parcel, a structure was removed, additional parking for the Althouse Arboretum was added, and a meadow for open play is already in use. Two old school buses on the parcel will be renovated and used for recreation programming.
To develop the Schwenk Woods Trailhead, Upper Pottsgrove received a $25,000 PMRPC Minigrant and the Township provided roughly $9,000 in matching funds. The project included construction of a parking area, a spur trail, drainage improvements, and a crosswalk and signage. The parking area includes ADA parking spaces and a bench area. The parking area will serve Sussell Park, located on the north side of Snyder Road. In the future, trails will be added to the Schwenk Woods to further expand the Township's growing trail network.
